  • Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande are engaged.
  • Davidson recently revealed to Variety that his first tattoo, the words "swerve life" on his leg, was inspired by a Big Sean lyric.
  • Grande and Big Sean were a couple for over eight months before splitting in 2015.

Pete Davidson famously boasts a collection of questionable tattoos, but the origin of his first-ever tattoo has a particularly interesting backstory.

The 24-year-old recently revealed in an interview with Variety that his first tattoo, inked when he was 17 years old, pays tribute to a Big Sean lyric — who also happens to be his fianceé's ex-boyfriend.

"It's a tattoo I got with my buddy Ricky and it says 'swerve life,' because the Big Sean song, that had that — I think it was like, 'swerve,' and we were like, 'that's gonna last forever.' So that's on our legs," Davidson said.

The song in question is Kanye West's 2012 single "Mercy," featuring Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz. In addition to rapping the first verse, Big Sean repeatedly says "swerve" throughout the song.

Davidson's fianceé, Ariana Grande, previously dated Big Sean for about eight months. The couple split in April 2015 due to "conflicting touring schedules," according to a joint statement provided to Us Weekly.

The couple apparently met in 2012 and quickly became friends, collaborating on multiple tracks and music videos, including Grande's single "Right There" from her debut studio album. They may have even shared similar inside jokes as Grande does with Davidson — like an interest in "Harry Potter" humor.

Of course, Grande was years away from her relationship with Big Sean — and many more years away from her relationship with Davidson— when the comedian got those lyrics tattooed. It's not clear whether he has since put the connection together and how he'd feel about it, but it wouldn't be the first time he has regretted some ink.
